Transforming Connectivity: $81 Million I-85 & SR 74/Senoia Road Interchange Improvement Project Kicks Off in December

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), in partnership with the City of Fairburn, is set to launch a transformative infrastructure initiative: the $81 million I-85 and SR 74/Senoia Road Interchange Improvement Project. With the Notice to Proceed officially issued, preliminary construction activities are slated to begin this December, marking the start of a three-year effort to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and support future growth in Fairburn and the surrounding areas.

This collaborative project reflects the shared commitment of GDOT and the City of Fairburn to address critical transportation challenges, improve mobility, and create safer and more efficient travel for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Phase One: Site Preparation and Utility Relocation

The first construction phase will focus on clearing obstructive trees and vegetation within the project area. This step is necessary to improve visibility, provide safe access for construction crews, and prepare the site for major upcoming upgrades.

Following clearing, crews will begin relocating underground and overhead utilities, including AT&T, Georgia Power, and Comcast services. This phase is highly coordinated, with utility providers working sequentially to minimize service disruptions. Given the complexity of relocating utilities in an active corridor, this step may take several months or longer to complete.

Traffic Management and Safety

As work progresses, the project area will become an active construction zone. To ensure the safety of workers and drivers, lane closures will be implemented on SR 74 and I-85 during specific times:

  • Single Lane Closures:

    • Daytime: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Overnight: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Double Lane Closures:

    • May be required as construction advances, with ample advance notice provided.

Drivers must stay alert, plan for delays, and follow posted detour routes. Roadside message boards, GDOT press releases, and social media updates will inform residents and commuters of real-time changes.

City of Fairburn’s Vision for Progress

For the City of Fairburn, this project is a cornerstone of its vision for enhanced connectivity and economic vitality. “This is more than a road project—it’s an investment in Fairburn’s future,” said city leaders. “Our partnership with GDOT underscores our commitment to addressing transportation needs and ensuring our city remains a vibrant, accessible hub for residents, businesses, and visitors.”

The I-85 and SR 74 interchange redesign is expected to alleviate congestion, streamline access to the city’s business districts, and improve overall mobility. As a gateway to Fairburn, this project represents a critical step toward creating a safer, more efficient travel experience for everyone.

Long-Term Benefits

Upon completion, the interchange improvements will significantly enhance traffic flow, reduce travel times, and provide a safer, more reliable roadway for the region. The project also positions Fairburn as a forward-thinking city prepared to support ongoing growth and economic development.

Keeping the Community Informed

Transparency and communication are key priorities for GDOT and the City of Fairburn throughout this project. To ensure the community remains informed of progress and potential impacts, regular updates will be shared via press releases, social media channels, and local stakeholder meetings.

What Residents Can Do

While the road to progress comes with temporary challenges, patience and preparation will be essential. Motorists are urged to:

  • Stay informed through GDOT and City of Fairburn updates.
  • Plan for delays and detours.
  • Exercise caution and adhere to reduced speed limits in the work zone.
