Fairburn Connectivity and Gateway Livable Centers Initative

The City of Fairburn is committed to fostering a vibrant, accessible community for residents and visitors. With support from a $200,000 grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Livable Centers Initiative (LCI), the city is conducting the Fairburn Connectivity and Gateway LCI Study to improve transportation infrastructure, create pedestrian-friendly environments, and integrate smart technology to promote a space where people can live, work, play and thrive.

The study focuses primarily on Fairburn’s Education Campus, which is home to Georgia Military College and Brenau University and serves as a gateway into the city’s revitalized downtown area.

The LCI focus rests on two locations – the existing campus and surface parking along with a former restaurant and undeveloped parcels to the northeast of the campus.

Livable Centers Initiative (LCI)

The Livable Centers Initiative is a groundbreaking program funded annually by the Atlanta Regional Commission . The initiative is designed to foster vibrant, connected and sustainable communities throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area by integrating transportation planning with land-use development.

Goals of the LCI Program

The primary goals of the LCI program are to:

  • Enhance Connectivity: Improve access to a variety of travel modes, including transit, walking, biking, and driving.
  • Promote Mixed-Use Development: Encourage the development of mixed-income residential neighborhoods that include employment, shopping, and recreation options.
  • Foster Sustainable Growth: Support development patterns that reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and preserve natural resources.
  • Engage the Community: Develop outreach processes that promote the involvement of all stakeholders in the planning and implementation process.

Key Components of LCI Projects

LCI projects typically include:

  • Transportation Improvements: Enhancing roadways, sidewalks, bike paths, and public transit to ensure efficient and safe travel.
  • Land-Use Planning: Encouraging mixed-use developments that integrate residential, commercial, and recreational spaces.
  • Community Engagement: Involving residents, business owners, and stakeholders in the planning process to ensure that the projects meet the community's needs.
  • Sustainability Practices: Implementing green infrastructure, energy-efficient buildings, and other sustainable practices to promote environmental stewardship.
